Facing another measuring-stick game against a highly-touted non-conference foe, Gilroy’s varsity girls field hockey team fell flat Tuesday, losing 4-0 to St. Francis.
According to GHS Coaches Adam and Erin Gemar, the Mustangs were beaten up and down the field, lost possession of the majority of balls up for grab and didn’t adjust quickly enough to a new lineup installed before the game.
“It’s a little disappointing,” Erin Gemar said. “I thought we would come out better today.”
Down 3-0 after the first 30 minutes, Gilroy was forced to play more for pride than a win in the second half. Coach Adam Gemar said it was a day when few of the Mustangs played their best.
“As a team, we were flat,” he said.
Both coaches did recognize several GHS players who played well against such stiff competition. The Lancers have not lost all season, and currently sit atop the standings of the ultra-competitive Mount Hamilton Division.
“I felt like our goalie Caitlyn (Pierotti) stood out and freshman Dani Hemeon,” Erin Gemar said.
Both coaches also noted the defensive play of Emily Haygood and Sam Saenz.
After going 10-0 in Tri-County Athletic League games and only allowing one goal in those contests, the step up in competition over the last two weeks has shown areas for improvement. Gilroy lost 2-1 to Archbishop Mitty on Oct. 12, 5-3 at Saratoga last Friday and now by four goals to St. Francis. Playing against inferior league competition over the course of a month could be to blame.
“I’m sure it does (affect our improvement),” Erin Gemar said. “Mentally almost as much as physically. But you have to make the best of it and (Tuesday’s game) should make us a better team for CCS.
“Each time we play one of these teams we take that experience,” she said.
Playoffs begin in two weeks and the coaches said they expect to receive a No. 5 seed for taking first in the TCAL.
The Mustangs’ next and final home game will be Tuesday, Oct. 30 against York. The action will begin at 5:30 p.m.
