Gilroy– Gilroy High volleyball coach Sue Grogan certainly wouldn’t call it a lost weekend, and yet there was the loss of another setter when Jennifer Smith jammed her finger.

Coming on the heels of Brittany Balanessi’s illness, it left the Mustangs a little short entering the Harbor Tournament. Freshman Lindsay Meazell was elevated to the varsity for the tourney, but she had only one day of practice with the varsity.

GHS went into the tourney seeded 11th of 16 teams, and finished 1-3. The Mustangs lost their opener, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10 to Sonoma Valley, and then fell to host Harbor 25-14, 25-6. After defeating Monte Vista Christian 25-13, 25-17, GHS was placed in the Silver Division. After sitting around for several hours, the Mustangs lost to Piedmont Hills 25-19, 25-19.

“One thing that killed us, especially with Piedmont, was we let errors get out of hand,” Grogan said. “Between attack errors and service errors, we just didn’t do well. We will be working on placement this week, as well as eliminating errors.”

Grogan said she thought the Mustangs (8-9) played better two weeks earlier at the St. Ignatius Tournament, but felt there was benefits to this event as well.

“We have to approach this as a learning thing,” Grogan said. “We’re learning the different styles that teams play. We just have to get more confidence in our game.”
