Hoshida shoots 73 to lead Mustang duffers to fourth-place finish
in Santa Teresa Invite
SAN JOSE – The Gilroy High boys golf team howled through the Valley Course at the Coyote Creek Golf Club on Thursday, finishing in fourth place at the Santa Teresa Invitational.

“Overall, this performance is a feather in our cap,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “We beat some good teams today, and this would help us if we need to use it for the at-large selection in CCS. The guys knew how important this day was.”

The Mustang duffers combined for a 328 team score with Los Gatos (313) winning out, Sacred Heart (320) in second, Pacific Grove (325) in third, and Harbor (334) in fifth. Gilroy was by far the best of the Tri-County Athletic League teams, as Salinas shot a 346, Palma shot a 351, and Live Oak shot a 396.

“We missed the giant third-place trophy by three strokes,” Kuwada said. “Our next tourney, we will face schools from the Central Valley and East Bay so this showing became very important.”

Gilroy will compete in the Atwater Invitational at Stevinson Ranch on April 19 and then return to league action April 21 at Laguna Seca GC against Palma and Hollister.

Senior Thomas Hoshida led the way for the Mustangs at Coyote Creek, shooting a team-low 73 on the par 72 course in South San Jose.

“Thomas played well today, he was 2-under for most of the day and then made a triple bogey,” said Kuwada of Hoshida. “This was a big confidence booster for him.”

Senior Ryan Dinsmore followed with a strong 77, while sophomore Stephen Freeth and senior Daniel Perry both finished with 89s.

“Ryan grinded out a 77. He was having trouble in the afternoon winds. It was very windy in the afternoon, typical of Coyote Creek,” Kuwada said. “Daniel and Stephen struggled to manage the wind and putt on the hard fast greens.”
