Dear Editor,

I have been involved as a parent and volunteer for Gilroy High School athletics for more than 25 years. During most of that time, Jack Daley has been the athletic director.I can expound paragraph after paragraph on what an outstanding individual Jack is. Our community knows that. What Jack has done for the students and student athletes at GHS is above and beyond the call of duty. I have witnessed firsthand the countless hours committed to the many duties and challenges that go with the athletic director’s job and it is staggering.

During and before the April incident involving track coach Alvin Harrison, mistakes were certainly made. Was Jack Daley 100% responsible for these mistakes … ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

I recently went through the live scan fingerprinting process and was asked for my driver’s license information at that time. How it never surfaced that Mr. Harrison had a suspended license is beyond my comprehension and certainly out of Mr. Daley’s control. Superintendent Debbie Flores herself said that “what we’ve learned is that it’s a process that needs to be handled by Human Resources. And we are going to handle that process from now on.”

OK, enough said – mistake made, mistake realized, deal with it appropriately in the future, learn from the mistake and be thankful that no GHS student was injured in the accident. Dragging a fine gentleman, a dedicated 23-year employee of the Gilroy Unified School District, through this is inconceivable.

We all learned at an early age that “two wrongs don’t make a right.” It was a wrong to hire Mr. Harrison and all that has followed. It will be a significantly greater wrong to release Jack Daley as GHS athletic director. I hope the GUSD school board reconsiders.
