There’s a City Council election coming up this November. Three seats need to be filled and if there were ever a time for good people with critical thinking skills and the ability to articulate their positions to consider running for a local seat, the time is now. Taking care of Gilroy’s future is what it’s all about.

Gilroy is great, and a City Council that has the community at top of mind and the ability to navigate through the issues is critically important.

The time is now for people to consider running. Experience is not necessary, passion and a belief in our city’s future are.

2. New city leaders from Leadership Gilroy and the Rotary Club?

There are good people in the Rotary Club, for example, who could make a real difference. There are graduates from Leadership Gilroy who are capable of handling this important task and who would bring refreshing perspective to the Council chambers. Look around, is there someone in your homeowner’s association who should be encouraged to run, someone in the Exchange Club, or someone who has been a good steward on the Garlic Festival board?

Approaching that person you think would do a great job for Gilroy is the right thing to do.

A Council doesn’t always have to agree. In fact, disagreement can be very healthy. Disrespect is another matter. This nation’s forefathers could argue with the best of them. That’s passion, and demonstrating one’s ability to persuade is a necessary skill on a policy-making board like the Gilroy City Council.

3. Talk to someone who you believe would make a very good candidate

But it’s vitally important to be able to walk away from a political skirmish without carrying that baggage around to the point that the baggage becomes the driving force behind decisions as opposed to what’s best for the community.

If you know someone who fits the bill, talk to them, encourage them and remind them what a great community service it is.

Gilroyans need choices, fresh faces to bring in fresh perspectives – people who are passionate about Gilroy and its future, people who demonstrate common sense and solid judgment, people who can really get the job done.
