A 31-year old Gilroy resident was attacked and stabbed Friday in a possible gang-related assault involving seven to 10 people, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

Police classified the crime as gang-related based on what the suspects said to the victim prior to the attack, said GPD Sgt. Wes Stanford. Stanford said he could not release the victim’s account of the crime.

Stanford said the 400 block of East Eighth Street attack was reported by three residents, if not more.

Police were called to the scene at 8:47 p.m. and found the victim sitting in a nearby driveway with a serious head injury and complaining of pain in his upper torso.

Medical personnel found the victim was suffering from blunt force trauma injuries and a stab wound. He was flown to a nearby trauma center where he was listed in serious but stable condition. No details on the weapons used could be released due to an ongoing investigation, Stanford said.

The GPD is especially cautious not to reveal information that may hinder gang-related cases, Stanford said. Sometimes the suspects themselves call the police to try and mislead investigators, he said.

“When crimes involve a gang they’re more serious because they have the tendency to chill a whole neighborhood to be forthcoming,” he said. “If you let a gang run rampant, people are going to live in terror.”

The case is being investigated as a possible gang crime. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the GPD’s Anti-Crime Team at 846-0350, or leave an anonymous tip at (800) 782-7463.
