Gilroy High’s varsity boys volleyball team came out fired up in its first game of the season Tuesday, but the Mustangs couldn’t hold off the visiting Aptos Mariners, losing in four sets: 17-25, 27-25, 20-25, 21-25.

With players still looking to figure out their roles, Gilroy coach Sue Grogan said it was a solid performance against a perennial power such as Aptos.

“We’ve still got to work out some bumps,” Grogan said. “But we’ve got a pretty tight team. The guys are communicating with each other.”

The Mustangs won the second set by resisting all of the Mariners’ advances at capturing momentum. The teams traded one or two points at a time, with neither squad leading by more than three points. Trailing 24-25, the Mustangs scored the final three points to win the set.

Kevin Bruce was Gilroy’s leader in kills with 14, while also contributing five digs and two blocks. Alfred Medenceles was second on the Mustangs with nine kills and Paolo Palao had six. Michale Leininger led Gilroy with 18 digs.

The Mustangs will be back on the court Thursday when they take on Pioneer at 6:30 p.m.
