Gilroy – One day after coming close, Gilroy got the job done as it earned its first boys tennis win of the season 6-1 Tuesday over Watsonville in a Tri-County Athletic League match.
“It was good to get the first one under our belt,” GHS coach John Langer said. “Watsonville is inexperienced. Still, it was encouraging for the guys to get some confidence.”
Senior Ben Wilson and sophomore Mitch Souza continued unbeaten for the Mustangs (1-3). Wilson (4-0) at No. 1 singles defeated Gilbert Villacana 6-1, 6-3. Other singles winners for Gilroy were Matt Chan over Javier Vargas 6-2, 6-0; Michael Tajan over Javier Vargas 6-2, 6-0, and Corey Gardner over Isaiah Castro 6-0, 6-2.
Souza (3-0) teamed with Edwin Hernandez at No. 3 doubles to beat Jesus Cardenas and Adrian Alanis 6-0, 6-0. Also, the No. 1 doubles team of Sai Erdenechemeg and Sangmin Park defeated Jose Villanueva and Christian Barajas 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
The Wildcatz got their only point at No. 2 doubles where Eric Sotelo and Jose Guzman defeated Zach Singh and Esteban Delgadillo 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Gilroy came close Monday before dropping a 4-3 decision to San Benito. Wilson got the Mustangs off to a fast start when he outlasted Michael Coffey 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. Gardner won at No. 4 singles and Souza teamed with Vinh Vong to win at No. 3 doubles.
“He’s been playing with a ton of consistency,” Langer said of Wilson. “I told him and the boys to just hit the ball back and (your opponents) will make a mistake, and he’s taken it to heart. It’s real difficult to beat him because usually (opponents) will make mistakes before he does. I think he’s matured a lot in the last year.”
Gilroy is back in action at 3:30pm today when it hosts Carmel.
