San Luis Obispo – Gilroy finished second Saturday in the Silver Division of the SLO Town Volleyball Tournament.

After dropping matches to Central (Fresno), San Luis Obispo and Rio Mesa (Oxnard) in pool play action, the Mustangs were placed in the Silver bracket. After defeating Morro Bay and Mission College Prep of San Luis Obispo, Gilroy (3-6) dropped the bracket final contest to Hanford Joint Union.

“There was lots of good, solid competition,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “I think we were in a tough pool. It was interesting going from our pool to Silver Division because there was such a broad range of teams.”

Offensively, Kevin Bruce was tops in kills with 22. Greg Calimpong and Alfred Medenceles were tops in assists with 30 and 22, respectively. Medenceles led with 12 service winners.

“We definitely accomplished what we needed to,” Grogan said. “The boys got to see a higher level of play, which I wanted them to be exposed to. And, we had guys who had never been to a tournament as well.”

The Mustangs open Tri-County Athletic League action at 6:30pm today against San Benito.
