Gilroy – The Gilroy Shockers 16-and-under fastpitch softball team is headed to the 2005 National Softball Association (NSA) Western World Series in St. George, Utah.
The Shockers open play Monday in the 17-team “A” division and will face teams from all over the west, including Utah and Idaho.
Coach Jose Melendrez said this is the first time the squad has qualified for the Western World Series and it’s the biggest event of the summer season. Since May, the Shockers have had to finish in the top three in a certain number of tournaments to qualify.
“They’ve been doing very good,” Melendrez said. “Majority of the girls play for Gilroy High. They’re very good ballplayers.”
Two Shockers, All-TCAL honorees Dana Schoeneman and Brittany Balanesi and Caitlyn Pierotti suited up for the varsity Mustangs this past spring.
The tournament wraps up Saturday, July 23.
