Dear Editor

I was shocked to see the article in the Saturday edition of the Gilroy Dispatch that Rich Imler had passed away. I met Rich at Luigi Aprea school when I was picking up my granddaughter one day, and over of time period of time I considered him a friend.

We had a second home in Discovery Bay, and when he told me he was moving there I offered to show him around and introduce him some of the people I had become acquainted with in the 10 years we had lived there.

On a Saturday afternoon when my family was there, he stopped by our house. My granddaughter who attended Luigi Aprea, was there at the time. After that meeting, I became well acquainted with him and realized why my granddaughter and her family thought so much of him.

My wife was a teacher. My father was a teacher and a principal, and most of our family friends were teachers and in the teaching profession. I think my excellent impression of him was based on growing up around them and the many aunts, uncles and cousins in the teaching profession.

I had a long discussion with him at lunch about the Gilroy Unified School District, and I believe he was entirely right on his opinion of the district .This man had friends everywhere he went and he well deserved them. He will be missed in life as he was missed here in Gilroy. Every time I saw him, he always told me to say “Hello” to his friends at Luigi Aprea school and here in Gilroy.

In my opinion, with the record this man had in Gilroy for the past 30 years, a school should be named for him.
