GILROY – It came as little surprise that Gilroy High’s girls soccer team swept most of the postseason Tri-County Athletic League awards after winning a league title for the third straight season.

Irene Figueroa, Ariana Vera, Ariana Carrillo, Rahni Giardina and Katelyn Nebesnick were all named First Team all-TCAL, while Samantha Saenz, Monique Barragan, Alexandria Maldonado, Indra Garcia and Breanna Rose were placed on the second team.

Figueroa was named the league’s Co-Most Valuable Player with Annika Rose of Notre Dame, Vera was named TCAL Senior MVP, Carrillo received TCAL Junior co-MVP and Garcia was named TCAL Sophomore MVP.

Vera had a team-high 11 goals on the season, giving her 35 for her career. The mark is believed to be a school record, according to Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez, who took home TCAL Coach of the Year honors.

Carrillo finished the season with 10 goals, good for second on the team, and Garcia had a team-high nine assists. Nebesnick had five goals and seven assists.

Other Mustangs to receive recognition for their play this season included Sarina Sandoval and Savannah Silacci, both given TCAL honorable mention, and Mandi Jo Torres for sportsmanship.

The TCAL’s varsity boys soccer awards were also released this past weekend.

Gilroy’s Bruce Ocana was named TCAL Midfielder of the Year, while Jorge Sanchez received the TCAL Sophomore of the Year award.

Mustangs goalie Luis Galvan Jr. was given the TCAL Co-Freshman of the Year award with Alex Tellaz of Salinas.

Ocana and Jorge Montano were named first team all-TCAL. Ocana, a senior, scored a team-high 10 goals to go with a league-leading 11 assists. Montano, also a senior, played on Gilroy’s backline as a defender.

GHS seniors Andy Moya (midfielder) and Carlos Cortez (Forward) were named to the all-TCAL second team.

Galvan Jr. and senior John Paul Sanchez were TCAL honorable mention.
