Gilroy – This weekend, the Gilroy Little League softball All-Star teams, both representing District 39, started off their Section 5 tournaments in dominating fashion.
At Gilroy High Saturday, the Majors All-Stars annihilated District 49’s North San Jose by a score of 20-5.
Majors All-Star pitcher Danielle Kinoshita earned the victory on the mound while Lindsay Holt, Adrianna Ozuna and Alissa Castro headed up the team’s explosive offensive attack.
Majors manager Dennis Castro said his team took advantage of San Jose’s inexperience and youth.
“It was one of those games where San Jose is a young team and we’re a fairly older team with few young players,” Castro said.
“(The girls) have played together for a long time.”
Castro had a good feeling about his team coming into All-Star play.
“When I picked this team and put it together with the other managers, I felt a little bit like George Steinbrenner,” Castro said with a shake of his head.
“I started thinking, ‘I’ve got the Yankees here.'”
Castro believes there will be better competition for his team should they move on to the Northern California State Championship Tournament in Sunnyvale.
A win today at GHS at 6pm, which will be against the winner of Monday’s meeting between North San Jose and Sunnyvale, will advance the team to that tournament.
Playing up in Sunnyvale, the Minors All-Star team also cruised Saturday in the first game of its best-of-three series against Sunnyvale Southern with a 10-0 win.
Gilroy pitcher Sarah Spindel allowed just one hit while holding the Sunnyvale sluggers scoreless.
The Minors All-Stars’ offense, which scored five runs in the final inning, was bolstered by Celeste Mendoza (2-for-3), Spindel (1-for-1, three runs, five steals) and Amber Gamboa (1-for-2, two RBI’s).
Game 2 of the series was set to take place Monday at Sunnyvale Middle School at 5:30pm.
