The Gilroy Majors Tournament of Champions team opened up its schedule by defeating Scott’s Valley 8-0 Wednesday in Santa Cruz.
Raphael Garcia did it all for Gilroy, pitching a complete game and driving in six of the runs. He launched a three-run home in the bottom of the third inning then hit a bases-loaded double in the fourth as part of a five-run inning.
Chris Hernandez, filling in for an absent player, had a solid game at first base, recording four putouts including three unassisted.
Gilroy continues in the double-elimination tournament today against Santa Cruz at noon.
Minors – National
The Gilroy Cubs defeated the Santa Cruz Pirates 18-3 Wednesday in the second game of the TOC tournament in Aptos.
Andrew Wood had a double that drove in two runs. Anthony Ruiz also had two RBIs off a hard-hit single. Andreu Bartholic laid down a picture-perfect bunt to advance a runner and made it safe at first base.
The Cubs had a solid game of pitching with Brendan Holler starting and Kenny Dipko making his first pitching appearance of the tournament.
In the first game Monday, Brian Ransom had a triple, two doubles and a single and scored every time in the Gilroy Cubs’ 16-6 victory over the Watsonville Marlins. Alex Herrera had his best hitting game yet, with a triple, a double and a single, scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Brian Ransom, who pitched four innings, had seven strikeouts and assisted in three outs in the field. Holler closed it off in the fifth inning and had two strikeouts.
The Cubs will be facing Scotts Valley today at 10am at the Aptos junior high school field.
Minors – American
The Gilroy American TOC team defeated Salsipuedes of Watsonville 3-0 Monday. Jalynd Gallardo pitched all six innings and only allowed one hit. He had 13 strikeouts.
Gilroy, who scored all three runs in the first inning, had timely hitting by catcher Ryan Fredricks and third baseman Travis Hill.
Solid defense was turned in by Alex Vega and Adam Gonzalez.
Gilroy will play against San Lorenzo Valley today at 10am.
