Mustang swatters drop N. Salinas, 5-2
GILROY – The Mustang tennis team recaptured its winning strokes Thursday, taking out league-foe North Salinas for a 5-2 match victory on the Gilroy High courts.
“Today, we looked good,” first-year head coach Chris Wolowier said. “We were a little rusty coming off break, but today our spirits turned and people played with enthusiasm.”
Gilroy, which is 5-7 in the Tri-County Athletic League with three matches remaining on the schedule, swept all three doubles bouts against North Salinas.
Back together again in the No. 1 doubles position after testing the singles competition, the top tandem of Peter Adams and Anthony Christian claimed a straight-sets victory.
The No. 2 duo of Chris Adams and Anthony Dragotto won in three sets, while the No. 3 pair of Alex Santa Maria and Julien Mireles continued to play at the top of their game, winning in straight sets.
Senior Christian Rivera recovered from a first-set loss to win in three sets in the top singles spot, while freshman Ben Wilson faltered in straight sets in the No. 2 position.
In the No. 3 slot, junior Ryan McBrearty came through in a first-set tiebreaker and then sealed his victory in the second set. Senior Andres Sandoval battled the distance, but lost in three sets.
Up next, the Mustangs will host Palma on Tuesday and travel to Live Oak on Thursday with both matches beginning at 3:30 p.m. Gilroy is also scheduled for a make-up contest against Salinas.
“We’re trying to finish the season strong before the T-CALs next week,” Wolowier said. “We’re looking forward to that.”
