GILROY – Halftime was a long time coming for North Salinas Wednesday night.

By intermission, Gilroy’s girls soccer team had already posted four goals on the visiting Vikings, leaving any chance of a comeback outside the realm of slim and none.

The Mustangs tacked on one more goal in the second half to win their first Tri-County Athletic League contest 5-0.

“It’s the first league game, we’re a young team and any time you have success you have to build on it,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “It’s also a reminder that we have to push ourselves.

“In the second half we played to the level of our competition.”

Ariana Carrillo kicked off the first-half scoring spree by weaving through defenders before putting the ball in net. She added another score on a through ball from Indra Garcia, who scored Gilroy’s second goal. Alex Maldonado recorded the third goal and Katelyn Nebesnick added the fifth.

The Mustangs are now 3-1-2 on the season and face Watsonville today at 5 p.m. in Gilroy. With an 18-day layoff following the contest, Hernandez is hoping his young club can keep its focus.

“We just have to make sure we’re fixing the things we know were supposed to,” he said.

Despite having only three seniors, the talent level is high enough that Hernandez thinks this year’s club could outperform the Mustangs from a season ago, which lost in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs.

“So far, the way we’ve started has allowed me to keep pushing forward the goal of winning league and advancing in CCS. It’s very doable.

“I’m very excited with this team because as frustrating as youth is, the potential is very high.”
