Gilroy’s girls’ volleyball team got back on the winning track Tuesday, defeating host Everett Alvarez 25-19, 25-19, 25-7 in a Tri-County Athletic League encounter.

“We moved different people around, and it took them a game and a half to figure out their rhythm,” Mustangs’ coach Sue Grogan said. “We wanted to get a lot of players playing time and we were able to do that.”

GHS (14-13 overall, 4-4 TCAL) had 27 kills as a team and 14 aces.

Vanessa Wilkins led the Mustangs with 10 kills and four blocks. Brittany Balanesi and Jennifer Smith combined for 16 assists. Smith and Sara Hugo had five digs apiece. Kayla Meazell had four aces, and Caitlin Chisolm and Megan Leach each had three aces.

The GHS sub-varsity teams made it a clean sweep. The junior varsity team beat Alvarez 25-19, 25-23, and the freshmen won 25-17, 25-18.

Two weeks ago Gilroy was buried near the bottom of the TCAL standings.

After a 5-2 win over Everett Alvarez in Salinas, the Mustangs (4-6 overall, 4-5 in TCAL) have won three straight and are moving up in a hurry.

No. 2 singles player Emily Castro and No. 1 doubles team Holly Hunter and Karissa Tellez led the latest win as they notched their third straight wins.

Castro defeated Susie Ngoi 6-4, 6-4, and Hunter and Tellez beat Christina Wong and Grace Chong 6-0, 6-4.

The other singles winner for GHS was Amy Huang, 6-0, 6-0 over Delfina Villasenor.

Alvarez won the other singles matches as Somone Gee defeated Gories Kwong 6-2, 6-3, and Charlene Speer beat Cherilyn Christian 6-4, 6-2.

The Mustangs swept the doubles matches. Natalie Toews and Kim Johnson edged Christine Kim and Vanessa Lasarnia 6-1, 6-7, 10-5, and Alissa Castro and Sidney Ebert eased past Bebette Castro and Katrina Batalla 6-0, 6-4.

“We weren’t as aggressive as we had been in some previous matches,” GHS coach Randy Barbaglia said. “There may have been a little letdown after (the last match with) San Benito. But we’ve showed great improvement over last year when we were winless.”

Gilroy is back in action at 3:30pm today when it hosts Alisal.
