Fernwood Cellars’ 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon was recently awarded a gold medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, which was held January in Sonoma County.
Fernwood’s 2009 Santa Cruz Mountains Vanumanutagi Ranch Chardonnay was also awarded a silver medal.
The awards come on the heels of the Affairs of the Vine 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Shootout in San Francisco, which was held Aug. 15 and judged 217 cabernets from 43 different appellations. After 26 judges held two rounds of tasting, Fernwood’s 2007 Cabernet came in third place. Fernwood then went on to the Affairs of the Vine competition Sept. 29 in Chicago, where their cabernet scored 92 by the women judges and 91 by the men judges.
Both wines are estate grown and produced at Fernwood Cellars, a boutique artisan winery at 7137 Redwood Retreat Rd.
The land was homesteaded in 1863 by the great-great-grandfather of the owner and winemaker, Matt Oetinger.
