Junior Michelle Sosa scored eight of the Mustangs’ first 14 points en route to a game-high 20 as the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team defeated Santa Catalina 50-27 in second-round action of the Mustangs Classic on Friday night in Gilroy.
The victory moves the Mustangs (2-0) into Saturday night’s final versus Gunderson, winners over Aptos in the night’s other contest.
“We came out much more confident today and ready to play,” Sosa said.
Gilroy’s defense forced 19 turnovers in holding the Cougars, who relied heavily on perimeter shots, to a mere 24 percent from the field.
Deadlocked at 4-4 midway through the first quarter, the Mustangs, on a pair of buckets from Sosa and senior Chelsea Hill, quickly manufactured a 12-4 advantage and carried a 14-6 lead into the second quarter where the cushion inflated.
Alex Rose and Dani Hemeon contributed much of the offense in the second, scoring four points each while the Mustangs’ defense continued to make matters difficult for the Cougars.
Hemeon finished the night with eight points and Rose added a pair of rebounds and assists to go along with her four points.
Neither team managed much in the way of scoring in the third, combining for just 10 points. However, the Mustangs clicked in the fourth with Sosa, Hemeon, Ashley Lambert, Francesca Filice, Ashlee Williams and Emily Costa all finding the bottom of the net.
Saturday’s championship game is slated for a 6 p.m. start at GHS.
