After two relatively comfortable victories in the first two rounds of the Seaside Sweet 16 Tournament, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team needed overtime to defeat McNair-Stockton 49-43 on Wednesday night to advance to tonight’s championship game.

“It was really a game where it came down to our defense,” GHS head coach Tim Jones said. “It was really exciting.”

The Mustangs held McNair to its lowest point total of the season in handing the Eagles (11-3) just their second loss in their last eight games.

“They had a couple players over 6-feet tall and liked to post them up,” Jones said. “We didn’t allow them to get the ball and we really tried to slow the pace down and keep it at a half-court game.”

Michelle Sosa registered a team-high 19 points for GHS.

The Mustangs (8-1) face St. Francis C.C.C (7-2) in tonight’s final, which is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at Seaside High School.

The Sharks (7-2), who defeated the Mustangs in the finals of last season’s Mustang Classic, earned a berth into the Sweet 16 finale with a 51-43 victory over Northgate on Wednesday.

“They are a pretty solid team,” Jones said. “They are definitely a team to be reckoned with. We will have our hands full again tonight.”
