GILROY – The Gilroy High girls soccer team remained flawless in Tri County Athletic League play with a 6-1 win over visiting Salinas on Monday night.

The game was a make-up from last Tuesday when a tornado warning caused the game’s cancellation.

Nevertheless, the Mustangs (7-4-2, 5-0) didn’t miss a beat, scoring three or more goals for the fifth straight game, including a 4-0 shutout of Alisal on Friday.

The Mustangs gave up their first goal in league play, and even in the win, the lone goal stood out to head coach Jose Hernandez.

“We allowed a goal due to mistakes we made,” Hernandez said. “Those are things we will be working on in practice. We have to a better job of establishing ourselves on defense in the first half.

“Mo (Monique Barragan), Sarina (Sandoval), Monica (Mazzarro) and Jazzmine (Grisby) have been doing a good job for us. Our defense works quick and doesn’t allow space, and provides for our offense.”

The Mustangs had already built a 2-0 advantage on goals by Breanna Rose and Taylor Slattery before the Cowboys countered with the goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the half.

Katelyn Nebesnick tacked on the Mustangs’ third goal of the first half, executing a perfect direct kick, putting the right amount of bend to sneak the ball inside the left post.

“Indra (Garcia) and Katelyn are doing a fabulous job in the middle for us,” Hernandez said.

Garcia increased the Mustangs’ cushion to 4-1 10 minutes into the second half, receiving a nice through ball from Alex Maldonado and depositing it in the net.

Cynthia Sanchez capped the Mustangs scoring with two goals giving her six on the season.

The Mustangs face their toughest challenge of the season Wednesday, matching up against rival San Benito who is also 5-0 in league.

“San Benito gave us a loss last year and it is something that we want to take care of this year,” Hernandez said.
