A pair of underclassmen standouts lifted the Gilroy High girls varsity soccer team to a 1-0 halftime lead against visiting Scotts Valley on Thursday night. However, the defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Falcons deposited three second-half goals to down the Mustangs 3-1 in a nonleague tilt.

“The girls played well and continue to improve. Our energy level was good. We have plenty to work on, and we will,” GHS head coach Jose Hernandez said.

Freshman Alexi Slattery set up sophomore Jahkya Tuerillo for her second goal of the season toward the tail end of the opening half.

The Mustangs wrap up nonleague play with a 2-4-1 record and have three weeks to prepare for the launch of Tri-County Athletic League action where they will defend their title for the fifth time. Gilroy opens TCAL at Alisal on Jan. 11.
