GUSD, developers to share off-site improvement costs
Gilroy – A proposed settlement agreement between the school district and the developers of Gilroy’s largest housing development isn’t even as sweet for the school district as originally reported.
The proposed settlement doesn’t include a provision that developers pay for off-site improvements such as curbs, sidewalks and sewage drains.
Instead, the tentative settlement would have Glen Loma Group, a company representing the Filice family, taking responsibility for the work. Glen Loma would pay for the work up front, but GUSD would reimburse the developers for a share of the costs, to be determined.
The clarification comes before a meeting tonight at which the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees will consider the proposal.
Originally, Ethan Friedman, an attorney representing GUSD, said the developers would “take care of” off-site improvements. Today, Assistant Superintendent Steve Brinkman and Friedman clarified the statement saying that GUSD and Glen Loma would share the costs. Details regarding the cost sharing had yet to be worked out said Friedman.
For months, the school district has battled Glen Loma over the price of a nearly-nine-acre parcel, the site of its new elementary school that is in its first phases of construction. The saga could end tomorrow night, if school board members agree to an 11-hour settlement offer, struck between attorneys Monday afternoon.
The exact settlement price has not been disclosed, but GUSD attorneys say it exceeds $10 million.
