With another textbook performance at the plate and in the field, the Gilroy Little League Majors softball All-Star team capped an undefeated Northern California Division II State Championship tournament with a 9-1 victory over Redwood Empire on Monday night, sending the group of 12 year olds to the West Regional Championships.
This is the second year in a row Gilroy will have a representative in the West Regional majors tournament, which begins Saturday in Vancouver, Washington.
Lauren Castro went the distance, striking out seven while allowing one run on five hits in six innings.
Tallying at least one run in each frame, Gilroy jumped in front early with three runs in the top of the first on RBI-hits from Castro, Brook Loesch and Alli Hathaway.
Makenzie Holt recorded a RBI-fielder’s choice to plate Michaela Decker in the second inning as the girls continued to add to their lead.
Gilroy tacked on two more runs in the third, highlighted by a productive Adrianna Figone RBI-ground out.
Castro picked up yet another RBI in the fourth, bringing in Pati Soria, who singled earlier in the inning.
Hathaway and Karli Martinez teamed up for the eighth run of the evening; Hathaway hustled for a triple and Martinez finished the equation with the RBI-single. For good measure, Gilroy scored one final run in the top of the sixth with Gamboa crossing on a RBI-ground out by Loesch.
The all-stars begin West Regional pool play Saturday against Idaho. The team will be right back on the field Sunday to face Arizona.
The winner of the tournament earns the right to play in the Little League World Series.
