Dear Editor,

Tom Elias’ article on “Earth Warming” of 27 July reminds me of the fable about Chicken Little and the sky is falling.

Remember, an acorn fell and hit Chicken Little. She ran through the barnyard crying “Run for your lives – the sky is falling”. Other chicks and ducks, believing her, followed her. She met Reddy Fox who offered her and the others security if they came into the fox’s den. All followed Chicken Little into the den and were never seen again.

Yes, the earth is warming, and be thankful it is – 10,000 years ago we had the Ice Age, with mountains of ice 16,000 feet high on both North and South Poles. Glaciers fanned out from these ice masses, as far south as Yosemite Valley – carving the mountains and leaving a residual ice block that, when it melted, formed Lake Tahoe.

But for the earth’s warming, we would be living among ice fields. No green gardens anywhere, and we’d have to grub from sunrise to sunset just to feed our faces.

Elias’ article is nothing but global warming hysteria – nothing new.

Let’s look at the past records; New York Times headlines read “America’s longest warm spell since 1776”. That was March 27, 1933.

In January 1939, Time Magazine featured an article “The world, at least for the time, is growing warmer.” Time Magazine, 1974, “Weather aberrations may be the harbinger of a coming ice age”.

In 1976, a book “Cooling” by Lowell Ponte is quoted “The cooling has already done widespread damage and killed thousands of people in poor nations”. Unless counter measures are taken, Ponte warned, more would die, and famine and a world crisis could come by the year 2000.

An article in the July 24, 2006 newspaper, Human Events, said “It is not a question of science”. It is a question of whether Americans can trust what the media tells them about science.
