SAN MARTIN — The Frys.com Open Official Pro-Am became a tale of two Rickies on Wednesday as Ricky Barnes and Rickie Fowler led their foursomes to first-place finishes in the afternoon and morning flights, respectively, at CordeValle Golf Club.
Barnes’ group, which included amateurs Mark Barber, Bruce Charleton and Eric Stilianos, had the best overall score of 52, while Fowler, Randy Fry, Dan Spaulding and Jack Tretton finished at 53.
Both PGA Tour pros were impressed with the 7,333-yard course, set in the sun-drenched hills in San Martin.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen it. It’s a good driving course … the greens are good here,” said Fowler, who last week played in the Ryder Cup at soggy Newport, Wales. “It’s nice to get back on some firm playing surfaces.
“There’s a possibility of a lot of birdies out there if you stay on the fairway.”
The second-place groups were led by pros Brian Davis and George McNeill. Davis, Ken Lutz, Russel Sanders and Randy Queen collected a 54 in the morning, and McNeill, Hadi Morshed, Michael Harvey and Chris Baker scored 54 in the afternoon.
The third-place foursomes both shot 57. Paul Goydos played in the morning with San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson, Fry’s Electronics co-founder John Fry and Ronn Leowenthal; and Bob Estes played with Brad Dickey, Mark Mazon and Terry Raymond in the afternoon.
