Local golfer, John Ellis, fired a 3-over, 74 in his opening round at the 111th U.S. Open on Thursday at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Ellis, 31, started his round on the back nine, enduring up-and-down journey to the turn, fighting off bogeys at Nos. 11, 13, 14 and 18 with birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.
The Live Oak grad and Gavilan alum played his second nine holes at 1-over, sandwiching a birdie on the Par 3 seventh (173 yards) between a pair of bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8.
