At 8 a.m. Sept. 11, a short 30-minute ceremony will be held directly in front of the Gilroy Police Department on 7301 Hanna St. in remembrance of the law enforcement officers and firefighters who lost their lives 12 years ago during the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the Twin Towers in New York.
The ceremony will open with convocation by law enforcement chaplains and be followed by a posting of the colors by the police and fire department’s honor guard. Fire Department Chief Alan Anderson and GPD Officer Pat Sullivan will be spearheading the remembrance.
Chief of Police Denise Turner will not be in attendance this year and Anderson will be the only one to speak during the ceremony, according to GPD Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.
“The ceremony is a remembrance to heroes,” Espinoza said.
According to Espinoza, the remembrance ceremony has happened every year since he started working for the GPD 10 years ago and most likely has taken place every year since the September 11 attacks. The event is open to the public and it is recommended that attendees arrive early so as not to disturb the ceremonial posting of the colors.
