CALLER 1: I’m calling about the parade for the Gilroy Little League girls’ All-Stars last Saturday. I think it was a disgrace. There was hardly anybody there. They got a letter from the governor and he let them fly the state flag from the capitol building (above the dugout during the series) and I just think it was awful that there wasn’t more about the girls. They did a fantastic job. Every one of them needs to be acknowledged and praised. They did a wonderful job. Thank you. Bye.
GREEN PHONE: Yes, Caller 1, it would have been nice to see more Gilroyans out in downtown Saturday morning welcoming the girls home from the World Series. Who knows why there weren’t more parade-goers. Maybe not enough people knew about it – it was put together pretty quickly. Maybe the town wanted to sleep in Saturday morning. But the crowd that did make it out was mighty and those who didn’t missed out on the chance to meet a Gilroy sports history-making team. Their loss. Regardless, the phone would like to give a pat on the back to city councilman Craig Gartman for arranging the whole thing in a matter of days and raising some much-needed funds for Little League softball.
CALLER 2: I heard that there’s going to be four teams at the football scrimmage at Gilroy High Friday. Just wondering who will be playing who and when?
GREEN PHONE: Good question, Caller 2. From what we know, all four teams, Hollister, Gilroy, Salinas and Serra, will be on the field at the same time. The field will be split in half so that two teams will scrimmage on each side. Then they’ll rotate so that each team gets to play each other. The whole ordeal is supposed to last an hour and a half. The varsity scrimmage starts at 7pm, preceded by JVs at 5:30 and the freshmen teams at 4pm.
CALLER 3: Tell Free Lance columnist Josh Staloch that he just needs to chill about the A’s. The A’s are awesome and are here to stay. The Royals and Seattle? No wonder he’s so miserable. Jump on the A’s bandwagon and join the party. And I just want to say that no other Giants season has been more enjoyable to watch. Thanks.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks, Caller 3. That was a valiant try at making Josh a convert. We’ll let you know if he begins to wear green and gold around the office. But one question for you, Mr. A’s Supporter. Aren’t you the slightest bit worried that the glass slipper might fall off the foot of the Cinderella A’s? The Phone isn’t trying to rain on your parade, but this is baseball. It’s a game of inches and there’s still a lot of season left. It’s fun watching the A’s do so well, but just consider yourself warned. We wouldn’t want you to go into total meltdown if Oakland doesn’t make the playoffs. But things could be worse. You could be a Giants fan, in which case, you’re already in permanent meltdown.
