CALLER 1: I’m calling to see about Garcia. He was on the front page Saturday morning, and I already knew he was a Buccaneer.

Anyway, you guys focus on Garcia all the time when we have a champion boxer, and it couldn’t be front page. You have some picture of a lady with a shopping cart. And then in the top right corner of the sports page you have this little article, I know it’s all the way in Denmark but still …

You guys focus so much on Garcia, and it’s old news already. He’s a 40-year-old quarterback. He’s not going to win a Super Bowl. Yeah, he’s from Gilroy, but we have a champ in Gilroy you guys should focus more on.

GREEN PHONE: OK, you got us on the first part. If you awakened late enough Saturday, Garcia signed with the Bucs before you read about it.

Our guess is you slept in when the articles on Robert Guerrero appeared. We ran an advance and story on the day he regained his title, which is more than any other stateside newspaper had on an untelevised fight that occurred in Denmark. Garcia is 37 and led the Philadelphia Eagles within three points of the NFC Championship Game. That hardly qualifies him as a has-been. We will continue to monitor the progress of Guerrero as well. Gilroy is lucky to claim two professionals of the stature of Garcia and Guerrero.

CALLER 2: I am an embarrassed alumni from Mt. Pleasant varsity soccer, 84′-87.’ After reading your article and hearing about the game from my wife, I contacted the school and the district about Nick Arellano’s pathetic display of behavior. I even forwarded your article for them to review. Apparently times have changed.

No one from the school will respond to any of my e-mails. They obviously condone this type of behavior from their coaching staff. I remember a time when Mt. Pleasant had a good team but more importantly, we had a coach who was a great role model and who led by his knowledge of the game and his composure during pressured moments.

Gilroy is a blessed program to have coaches like Armando Padilla and Brian Hall. I’m happy for the boys of Gilroy. It’s amazing what great coaches can do for a stale soccer program. No offense to Craig Martin and the other coach at the time, but I assisted them about six years ago with goalkeeping. This program has turned around tremendously under Padilla and Hall.

GREEN PHONE: You’ll get no arguments from here about anything you wrote. Hard to believe Mt. Pleasant swept what happened under the rug but all we could do from here is report about it. If more people like you took the time to voice their disapproval, perhaps something would have been done about it.
