The very first thing teaching professionals will look at is the grip when golfers come to us for lessons. More often than not, the player grips the club too “deep” in the hands so the club is in the palm of the hand.
When it is in this location, it is difficult to generate club head speed and correctly work your hands and wrists through the shot.
The proper place to lay the club is across the finger joints in both hands. This keeps the hands much more active through the swing and will increase the clubbed speed as the club makes impact.
With your hands in this position, you can lightly squeeze the club in the fingers. As a result, the palm of the hand is not being used.
Think of throwing a baseball. Do you shove the baseball deep into your palm? Absolutely not. The baseball is held in the fingers and across the pads of your hands so that the ball rolls off them and you can use those fingers to help guide the ball.
So try gripping it very lightly in the fingers of both hands. You will see great results in no time.
