The Gilroy Unified School District invites the public to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Christopher High School at 5pm Thursday, at 5 p.m. at the corner of West Day Road and Santa Teresa Boulevard.

The school is scheduled to open for the 2009-2010 school year.

Big Band Benefit

Leal Vineyards, 300 Maranathea Drive, Hollister, presents a Big Band Bash Benefit to further the work of St. Joseph’s Family Center at 6 p.m. Nov. 10. Semi formal attire, $150/person.

Halloween party

The Gilroy Community Youth Center will host a free Halloween party for youth ages 6 to 17 from 2 to 7 p.m. today. Guests are encouraged to dress up for the event at the center that has billiards, shuffleboard, football, basketball and arts and crafts.

Republicans meeting

Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly at 7 p.m., Thursday. Meet at Mimi’s Cafe off 10th Street in Gilroy. The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and country.

Harvest dinner and auction

The Exchange Club of Gilroy is having their annual Harvest Dinner/Auction from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, at the I.F.D.E.S. Hall, Forest and Old Gilroy streets. The roasted chicken dinner, dessert and coffee is $25 per person. A live auction will be held.

Holiday boutique slated

A holiday boutique will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at Crossroads Christian Center, 145 Wright Ave., Morgan Hill. Featuring a bake shop, home decor, crafts, kids korner, garden, farmers market, jewelry and cafe serving homemade soup, sandwiches and specialty desserts.

St. Mary Cemetery tour

Visit our earliest cemetery with members of the Gilroy Historical Society at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. Meet in front of the Serra Cottage, 7950 Church St. for the short walk to this hidden resource. Participants on our most popular tour will meet John Gilroy, Jose Maria Amador and Catherine O’Toole Murphy Dunne.

Attention artists and vendors

The annual fundraiser faire is Saturday and Sunday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. There is still room for vendors. Charge to vendors $50 for a 8-foot table space. All crafts must be hand made by the artist. No commercial products allowed.

ICF scholarship breakfast

Branch 28 of the Italian Catholic Federation presents it’s semi-annual Scholarship Breakfast Sunday. Breakfast served 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Cullen Hall, St. Mary Church, 11 First St., Gilroy. Breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee and milk.

Proceeds benefit scholarship programs and ICF Charities. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Donation $5 adults and $3 children younger than 12.

Gilroy High School senior parents Grad Night Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the GHS library. Senior parents, please plan on attending our second Grad Night meeting.

AARP Safe Driving Class

AARP holds free one-day refresher courses for drivers 50 years of age and older. Driver safety and new laws will be covered. There is a minimal fee for a three-year DMV certificate for discounts on auto insurance. AARP membership not required. Call between 1 and 6 p.m. for time and location of next class.
