Morgan Hill – Organizers will lay out plans to incorporate the small community of San Martin at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting.

The highlight of the meeting could be Sylvia Hamilton’s laying San Martin’s plans to become a real city.

While Morgan Hill was incorporated in 1906, it has taken the rural area to the south a bit longer to reach that point.

However, after a year or more of citizen surveys and consultant research plus help from Morgan Hill city staff and residents, the San Martin Neighborhood Alliance, of which Hamilton is president, is ready to begin the real work of incorporating.

The SMNA was formed in 2000 to protect San Martin’s rural residential atmosphere and to find ways to provide a viable voice for residents in an area governed by the county Board of Supervisors, not themselves.

After considering alternatives such as annexing themselves to Morgan Hill or Gilroy, forming a special district and informal governing methods, the alliance settled on complete incorporation.

“Incorporation is obviously a huge undertaking and one that is not being taken lightly,” Hamilton said in a letter to the city.

She will ask council for a resolution in support of LAFCO starting the incorporation process.

LAFCO is the county’s land use agency that holds sway over all annexations and changes of format. Visit www.smneighbor.org

City Council and/or the Redevelopment Agency meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall Chambers, 17555 Peak Ave.
