Bins will be placed on every district campus to encourage
recycling
Gilroy – Classrooms across the district will be a little greener this fall. Recycling containers will be placed on every Gilroy Unified School District campus in hopes of reducing pollution and teaching students environmental friendly practices.
Through efforts by the GUSD’s Environmental Oversight Committee and a donation by South Valley Disposal and Recycling Inc., all students will have access to bins on campus. The company is covering the cost of the additional collection, explained EOC member and local businessman Chris Cote.
“(South Valley Disposal and Recycling) just really made a wonderful donation to everyone in the community by allowing that to happen,” Cote said.
The EOC is a self-sufficient group formed in May of volunteers such as city council members Charlie Morales and Paul Correa, Gilroy Parks and Recreation Commissioner Joan Spencer, Realtor and GUSD parent Denise Apuzzo, and energy consultant Patti Bloomquist. This summer two Gilroy High School students, Michael Stevens and Carly Apuzzo, joined the ranks as well.
The EOC is looking for another Gilroy High School student representative for the fall.
Currently the group is researching methods to purchase carpet without “outgassing” – a process where chemicals are released into the air, which can cause respiratory problems in students who have conditions like asthma, Cote said explained.
“We think that might have a positive impact on holding down our absences,” Cote said.
