Dear Editor,

I realize that I am late in expressing my disgust with the Gilroy Unified School District, but here it is, nonetheless. At first I was just a little bugged that my children had to be back at school on Monday, January 2, but didn’t realize what a blunder it was that the GUSD was having them come back on that day. I am a stay at home mom, so I don’t think in terms of paid holidays. Then my wise (and working) husband noted that January 2nd has to be an “official holiday” since New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday. Since his company recognizes Monday as a holiday, he will have the day off.

Now we have the conflict of daddy having the day off and the kids being expected to go to school. Then I received an “automated call” from the school district yesterday afternoon and had to laugh that they were reminding us to send our kids to school on Monday. I guess they too have realized their blunder in making this schedule, and probably realize that potentially lots of kids won’t be there come Monday morning.

My kids won’t. I have made the decision to keep them out to protest the district’s decision to have the children of Gilroy attend school on a day that NO OTHER school district will have their kids attend. The City of Gilroy offices are closed that day (I called and checked). We will receive no mail delivery, banks are closed, and according to The San Jose Mercury News, all counties are following suit in recognizing Monday as a holiday. So, in my humble opinion, GUSD needs to get their act together and keep up with what is considered the norm by everyone else.
