The Santa Clara County Public Health Department began vaccinating the general public against the H1N1 flu Monday. Previously the vaccine had been available only for those at high risk for illness or serious complications from the virus.

An estimated 800,000 Santa Clara County residents are in the high-risk category, and about three-quarters of them have been vaccinated so far. Public and private healthcare providers have received about 600,000 doses from late October to Dec. 31. Another 250,000 doses are expected to be shipped to local medical providers this month and early February.

Contact your healthcare provider to see if they have received the H1N1 vaccine. Retail pharmacies are also offering the vaccine. To find a retail provider near you, enter your zip code in the flu vaccine locator box on the Public Health Department’s Web site at www.sccphd.org under H1N1 flu Information.
