A 24-year-old Gilroy woman and her two young children were
hospitalized Tuesday morning after she lost control of her vehicle
on a slick stretch of Highway 129 and was struck by an oncoming
pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman was driving westbound with her daughters, ages 5 and 1, in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee at 10:53 a.m. in the vicinity of Pajaro Road near Aromas when she lost control of the vehicle while navigating a corner and spun sideways into oncoming traffic, CHP Officer Jaime Rios said.
Rios said a 1994 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 56-year-old Hollister man traveling eastbound struck the vehicle. The woman and her two children were transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose with complaints of pain.
“They were all conscious and alert, which was a good sign,” said Rios, who was at the scene following the collision. ”
On Wednesday, Rios said the 1-year-old child suffered a fractured elbow and facial bruising, but the extent of the 5-year-old’s injuries are not known. Rios said the woman complained of head pain, though the severity of her injuries also are unknown.
He said driver of the pickup told officers he was not injured.
Both lanes of Highway 129 remained closed until 11:27 a.m., and both lanes were reopened as of noon, Rios said.
Rios said Tuesday’s rainfall made the roadways slick. He said an ongoing investigation would determine how fast the woman was driving.
“We never blame it on the rain,” said Rios, adding drivers should take extra caution during slick road conditions.
