Gilroy – Firefighters will ask motorists to place a “voluntary toll” in their boots next week in a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
They will hang out at the intersection of First Street and Wren Avenue, waiting for the light to turn red. With their boots in hand, they will ask motorists to drop a donation of money into their boots.
The donations will help change the lives of the thousands of families in Northern California affected by neuromuscular diseases. The funds will help find treatment and cures for muscular dystrophy, fund clinics and help send kids to summer camp.
For the last 50 years, the International Association of Firefighters has been MDA’s No. 1 sponsor, raising millions of dollars to fight neuromuscular disease. The IAFF made a commitment to MDA – to find treatments or cures for neuromuscular diseases until the day the job is done.
In June, Fire Chief Dale Foster joined business and community members in another MDA fundraiser, a “lock-up,” in which they had to collect money to post “bail.”
Firefighters’ collections will help MDA provide children ages 6 to 21 who are affected by neuromuscular diseases with the opportunity to attend a free week of summer camp at Cam Harmon in the Santa Cruz mountains. MDA summer camp offers a wide range of activities and sports specially designed for people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs.
