Dear Editor,

I wanted to see a clarification or correction made to the report regarding the September 18th City Council Meeting and the Noise Ordinance. It is my understanding that the ordinance has been tabled indefinitely. This means that even a high level ordinance that matches that already on the books for the state of California and for the City of Santa Clara will not be in place any time soon.

This is a huge issue relative to barking dogs, loud televisions and stereos, and other nuisances. The ordinance as previously debated was attempting to deal with issues of public health and use of property relative to pool, air conditioning and other equipment at a level that perhaps was too much detail and not enforceable.

The city council needs to bring this ordinance back up to the 10,000 foot level and give Gilroy Police a high-level noise ordinance that is enforceable and against which citations can be written for offenses. Readers of the Dispatch need to be informed that the ordinance has been tabled, they need to review the city council meeting video from May and June, and need to contact the city council to put a noise ordinance back onto the council’s high priority list.
