The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the news that a critical safety and traffic improvement planned for Pacheco Pass Highway will be placed on indefinite hold. The flyover planned for the Don Pacheco “Y” where highways 152 and 156 intersect is on the shelf due to the state budget woes. The Valley Transportation Authority has labeled the project one of its highest priorities … we’d buy that if it weren’t for all the money being wasted on BART to San Jose. It’s too bad Supervisor Don Gage can’t do something about shifting some of those funds – guess motorists will just have to sit for hours during peak traffic time on Highway 152. And it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. Too bad.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy High School students who have unselfishly used their lunch hour to collect money for victims of the Asian tsunami. That’s the Gilroy spirit.

JEERS: For the lack of a plan to expand the present library or build a new library in Gilroy. Relying on the state to provide the dollars isn’t a plan, it’s a prayer – and the state simply wont be answering any of those in the near future.

CHEERS: For all those who have generously supported the Gilroy Center for the Arts. Donations for the $3 million endowment –after just a few weeks of the campaign – have reached $1.8 million. Wow! The McCormacks, Connells and Farottes have joined a growing list of donors supporting the project to bring a top-notch center to downtown Gilroy.

JEERS: For the ridiculous turnaround time for fingerprint results. The Gilroy Police routinely wait for more than a month for results. That’s absurd, and the item ought to be placed on the City Council’s agenda for discussion.
