Two gymnasts qualify for CCS meet
With one regular season game remaining, it seems the real Mustangs have arrived.
Avenging two one-run losses earlier in the season to the Cowboys, the Gilroy baseball team hit its way to a resounding 10-2 win over Salinas Wednesday.
“The real Gilroy team showed up today,” said Gilroy head coach Clint Wheeler.
Michael Stevens (double), Josh Sterling (double), Chris Hernandez, Drew Andersen and Matt Hemeon all had two hits apiece for Gilroy (15-10, 11-6 TCAL).
Salinas dropped to 18-9 overall and 9-8 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
Already ahead 3-0 after two innings, Gilroy really set some distance between itself and Salinas with a five-run third inning.
One stat Wheeler was particularly proud of was his team’s seven two-strike hits.
“We had a really good approach, mixed in with some hustle and putting the ball in play,” the coach said.
Jacob Dexter had a very solid day on the mound. The junior pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out six.
Regardless of whether Gilroy wins or loses its Senior Day tilt with Sobrato Friday at home, the Mustangs will take third in the TCAL behind San Benito and Palma. The ‘Balers already had the league title locked up before beating the Chieftains 17-7 Wednesday at home.
Wheeler said the win over Salinas puts his team in good shape for an at-large bid to the CCS playoffs.
“We’re definitely in for points,” Wheeler said. “It was a much different team today. I think we’re finally hitting our stride here.”
The Mustangs take the field with Sobrato Friday at 4pm.
Two Gymnasts to CCS
At the Santa Cruz Valley Athletic League varsity gymnastics finals Wednesday, two Gilroy gymnasts qualified for the Central Coast Section finals.
Amber Minderler’s 8.75 and Chelsea Garcia’s 8.65 in floor exercise qualified each of them for the May 19 section finals, which will be held at Gymtown in Burlingame.
Sophomore Veronica Kelly, who placed third all-around in last week’s JV league finals, missed qualifying in floor by two-tenths of a point.
“We were really happy to make it,” said Gilroy gymnastics coach Nikki Anagnoston. “They worked really hard to get there.”
