benefit local programs next month as part of the 2005 Garlic
No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament.
The city is looking for 27 four-person teams to each put up $60
to participate.
Gilroy – Residents with steel nerves and straight faces can ante up to benefit local programs next month as part of the 2005 Garlic No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament.
The city is looking for 27 four-person teams to each put up $60 to participate.
As on television, the final table of nine players will battle it out for the spoils, with the winning team deciding which group will receive the combined $1,620 in proceeds.
Prior to starting, teams will designate whether winnings will support youths, teenagers, or seniors.
“What I’m looking for is 27 groups of people to play in a tournament setting like they see on television,” said Bob Burch, tournament organizer and adult sports coordinator for Gilroy. “They can play for a few hands or a few hours depending on skill, cards, and luck.”
A dozen area businesses have sponsored the event so “that every dollar of the entry fee goes to the programs,” Burch said.
But the top players will have more than good will to show for their efforts. The top female and male finishers and the team with the most chips will receive trophies.
Players on the top five teams and those who reach the final table also will receive T-shirts.
Organizers encourage neighbors, co-workers, and any other groups to participate. They are allowing substitute players to allow firefighters, police, and others who may have to work during the tournament to participate.
The event takes place the weekend of July 16 and 17 at the Gilroy Senior Center at Sixth and Hanna streets. Saturday play takes place from 10am to 2:30pm, and on Sunday from 12:30 to 6pm.
Registration for the event takes place June 30, from 6:30 to 7:30pm, at the Gilroy Community Services Department in City Hall, at 7351 Rosanna St.
