There is a growing interest in holistic health and healing in Gilroy. In fact, the demand for these services has increased to the point that natural health professionals are traveling from out of town to serve the demand in Gilroy.

Last Saturday night, a group of Gilroyans joined a class given by Adaniel Lepe-Camacho, an educator on nutrition, essential oils and many other natural modalities. He has also created his own skin care line using all natural ingredients.

He came from Visalia to meet with us in a lovely home off Sixth Street that was built in 1930. I attended as a bit of a skeptic; although lately, conventional medicine hasn’t satisfactorily resolved my health issues, so I’m ready to explore what alternative healing methods might have to offer.

A former architectural engineer, Adaniel began his second career after seven years of passing kidney stones was finally cured through alternative medicine. Adaniel is eager to share his health tips. For instance, by dividing your weight in half, you will discover the amount of water you need to drink per day in ounces.

For some of us, that sounds like a lot. If you weigh about 200 pounds, that would be 100 ounces per day, or about 12 glasses, but a 100-pound person would only need about six glasses. Since we are all different sizes though, it makes sense that not everyone needs eight glasses per day.

Another health tip is the recommendation to drink water each morning before you brush your teeth. There are many good forms of bacteria that have collected from the saliva glands in your mouth, and by drinking you will wash them down into your stomach to be used as part of your digestion. When he began doing this, Adaniel says, “In one month, I lost 3 percent of my body fat, and my skin improved.”

A scanning device which can measure the anti-oxidant levels in blood is gaining in popularity, and Adaniel’s anti-oxidant level (37,000) reads at almost twice the average (19,000). A woman in Mexico City has been found to have the highest known reading so far: 180,000. She eats 10 times a day from the fruits and vegetables grown in her own garden and remains very thin.

Adaniel pointed out that there are 188 references to essential oils in the Bible, and that such oils have been used for healing and for pain relief for thousands of years. Holistic health techniques are tailored to the individual, so that an herbalist like Adaniel will hold a private session with each potential client and ask questions in order to understand what is needed. He will create a very specific custom-tailored blend of oils to suit that person’s wishes.

In the class, we tried oils made from cinnamon, chamomile, basil, wintergreen, frankincense, lavender (opens pores, relaxes, helps with vertigo) patchouli (from a white flower, especially good for dry or aging skin), and neroli (one of the most expensive oils, made from pure orange blossoms).

Adaniel passed one of the special blends around and had us place a drop at each temple.

“Not too close to your eyes,” he warned, “It‚ll make you cry.”

Yeah, right, I was thinking.

“I’m not going to feel anything from two drops of this stuff.”

In a few seconds, I was amazed.

I could feel a sensation all through my head, a fiery feeling that felt almost electric. It lasted for a long time, and was very soothing.

“Wow,” I thought, “I need to try this on the area where I have the most pain and see what happens.”

I’ll keep you posted.
