An 8-year-old boy from Gilroy was transported to an area trauma center via air-ambulance with non-life threatening injuries after he reportedly rode his bike onto to traffic against a red light and was not wearing a helmet.
On March 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m., Gilroy Police Officers responded to the intersection of Tenth and Princevalle streets for report of a vehicle vs. bicyclist collision, a press release stated. Officers arrived within two minutes and located the boy conscious and alert with family members, who were walking on foot with him at the time of the incident, according to Sergeant Pedro Espinoza with the Gilroy Police Department.
Fire Department personnel arrived a short time after to render aid to the eight-year old, the release stated.
The male driver of the 2000 Honda Accord remained on scene after the collision. The driver did not appear to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, according to a preliminary investigation.
Parents are reminded to be alert when riding bicycles with small children. A minor under the age of 18 is required to wear a proper-fitted helmet when riding upon a street.
Police said the victim is expected to survive.
