Gilroy – The goal is simple for Gilroy as it enters today’s Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Bob Hagen Memorial Gym. The Mustangs want to qualify 14 wrestlers for the Central Coast Section tournament next weekend.
If Gilroy is able to do so, it would be one step ahead of last year’s TCAL championship team. The Mustangs qualified 13 of 14 wrestlers last year. Gilroy is shooting for its fifth straight TCAL title.
Eight Gilroy wrestlers drew No. 1 seeds for the competition, which gets under way at 10am today. Jesse Delgado, 105; Martin Gonzalez, 121; Nicolo Naranjo, 127; Rudy Maldonado, 132; Travis Sakamoto, 142; Hunter Collins, 173; Andres Barragan, 191; and Jesse Rogers, 217, are all top seeded. The Mustangs have wrestlers seeded in the top three in 13 of 14 weight classes.
Gonzalez, Naranjo, Maldonado, Collins and Barragan are all defending champions. Naranjo is a three-time champ. Collins and Barragan have won two titles. And Austin Gubrud won a title two years ago.
Collins (32-1) and Delgado (30-2) bring the best individual records into the tournament.
The Mustangs had nine champions, three second-place finishers and one third-place finisher in breezing to their fourth straight team title last year.
“We want to see everyone qualify for the CCS meet,” GHS coach Armando Gonzalez. “Most of our guys are wrestling at a high level right now.”
The most competitive weight classes shape up at 114, 144 and 162.
