The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the addition of the historic Gilroy Hot Springs to Henry Coe State Park. Though officials were non-committal about what the future will hold for the site which once included cabins, a bathhouse, a swimming pool, dressing rooms and a three-story hotel, we would hope the public will once again be invited to enjoy the healing waters there. An reinvigorated hot springs could become an important tourist draw for the area. Officials have pledged to seek public comment before the management plan is developed. The Gilroy Visitor’s Bureau and Chamber will undoubtedly welcome that opportunity.
CHEERS: For Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Robert Baines, who ordered convicted child molester Brian DeVries released to rural Washington at his father’s home. There were fears DeVries would be released to Morgan Hill, but the judge and attorneys have seemingly found a reasonable solution. Perhaps this will end well.
JEERS: For the state’s decision to put the high school exit exam on the shelf temporarily. At what point will California actually follow through on accountability for student performance? The continual setting and then backing away from standards breeds public cynicism and mistrust.
CHEERS: For Saturday’s Garlic City Fun Run in downtown Gilroy. The cool cars, the bands, the food and the people watching make for the best downtown event of the year.
CHEERS: For the formation of the San Martin land-use task force, which will work with the county staff to set land use guidelines for San Martin. Having San Martin residents in a responsible position for the community standards is a huge step in the right direction.
