Take the tamale challenge
Put your cooking skills to the test at the Second Annual Tamale Making Contest and Fundraiser hosted by CARAS and El Charito Market from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 between Third and Sixth streets in downtown Gilroy. Labor Day bingo marathon

Fill the boot for MDA
Cal Fire Santa Clara Unit firefighters in Morgan Hill will host the “Fill the Boot” fundraising event from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12-13. The firefighters will be in the intersections of Monterey Street and Tennant Avenue and Monterey Street and Main Street in Morgan Hill collecting money from drivers and pedestrians to benefit over 1,900 local families served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Volunteers needed for Reading Hour
Join a group of community volunteers and read one-on-one with children at the El Toro Youth Center, the local site of the Boys & Girls Club, during an afternoon reading hour facilitated by Gamma Alpha Chapter on some Tuesdays. State parks exhibit
