Gilroy – An ice-cream vendor was assaulted and robbed near San Ysidro Park. The vendor was approached just before 7pm Thursday night at 451 Lewis St., by a youth, who then brandished a knife.

Three or four more suspects approached and began hitting the man’s face and body before the victim broke free and ran away, leaving his cart behind. As he looked back, the vendor saw one suspect stealing packets of Chiclets and ice-cream bars, police said.

The man suffered minor injuries. As of press time Friday, no arrests had been made.

Car Wash Benefits Youth Conference

Gilroy – South County teens are soaping up cars from 9am to 5pm Sunday, at Sno-White Drive in Morgan Hill to raise money for the second annual Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference, to be held May 26 at Gilroy High School.

A wash costs $5 plus an optional donation. The goal is to raise $400, the amount needed to rent space at the high school.

The conference focuses on developing leadership skills among South County youth.

Final Free Matinee Today at Library

Gilroy – The last free Spring Break movie matinee will be shown at 2pm today at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St. All are welcome.

Register for Gilroy Summer Programs

Gilroy – The city will be conducting a summer registration fair for all 2007 summer programs, including aquatics and day camps.

Community Services staff will be on hand to answer questions.

The fair will take place from 9am to noon, today, at the Gilroy Community Services Office, 7351 Rosanna St.

Gilroy – The FFA Boosters will hold its Annual Flower Sale from 7am until sold out, April 28 in the parking lot of Straw Hat Pizza and Kragen Auto Parts, 1053 First St.

Enter Teen Poetry Contest

Gilroy – Enter the April Teen Poetry Contest at the Gilroy Library. One winner from middle school and one from high school will be chosen. The deadline is April 28. Winners will receive a cash prize of $25 and will be entered into a national contest for possible publication.

Volunteers Needed to Build Trails

Gilroy – Volunteers for Outdoor California need help to build and maintain trails and restore natural habitat the weekend of May 5 and 6.

Volunteers will construct a section of the Valley Oak Trail, build the hike/bike Ohlone Trail and install stream crossings on the new multi-use Calaveras Trail.
