"If/Then"

Idina Menzel brings a new twist to her career in “If/Then” as a newly divorced woman looking for a job and starting a new life in New York. Menzel (originally in “Rent”) is best known for her Tony award winning Elphaha in ‘Wicked’ and more recently her popular award rendition of “Let It Go” in Disney’s “Frozen”.
The fates show paths she might take to get where she will finally make her life. “If/Then” brings her to crossroads and plays out the journeys along the way.
At times the performance is a little confusing and a little too long but it keeps the interest.
Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics) bring strength and effervesce of their prize winning abilities. Music is sharp and direct with lyrics that follow the Pulitzer Prize winners for “Next To Normal”.
Director Michael Greif, who also directed Menzel in “Rent”, provides a fast moving look to how the fates play the game and the gamble of which road she might miss or take.
An energetic talented cast keeps the plots moving (pay attention or you will get lost). Basic choreography moves the performance along. Interesting, clever, ever moving sets and lighting transform with the story and keep the audience involved with what is going on.
As usual, a super conductor and great local musicians augment the touring company musicians in the orchestra.
“If/Then” is a different way to look at life and create a new way of approaching areas that seem to need decisions we sometimes are not ready to make.
“If/Then” might not be for everyone but it will sure make you think.
