A neighborhood meeting regarding possible improvements to Sunrise Park will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Gilroy Library Community Room, located at the Gilroy Public Library at 350 W. Sixth St. in Gilroy.

The public is invited to the gathering, which will explore proposed minor upgrades and improvements to Sunrise Park, located 9525 Saddler Drive in Gilroy. The meeting is intended to get input on a draft list of potential items and to hear ideas for additional or alternate improvements to utilize the $45,000 available budget for this period.

The draft list of proposed upgrades and improvements includes a concrete vehicular access point at the northwest corner of the park (for mowers and service vehicles); re-striping the existing basketball court; resurfacing the existing tennis courts; painting the existing wooden backboard of the baseball diamond; purchasing extra windscreen material for the tennis court; purchasing extra nets for tennis courts; and purchasing an additional bike rack.

“We’ve been looking at possible improvements to existing equipment out there like the tennis court,” said Rick Smelser, public works director and city engineer.

Smelser said the City has also been looking into adding trees or benches to “spruce up” the park.

The community’s input for park improvements will be brought to a meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission Jan. 15. The Parks and Recreation Commission is then scheduled to bring its proposal to the Jan. 28 City Council meeting.
